Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge
Wildlife Reserve · Alamo, Texas
Two thousand acres of subtropical thorn forest and wetland on the Rio Grande that the US Fish and Wildlife Service calls the jewel of the National Wildlife Refuge System. It sits where two continental migration routes cross, at the northern limit of a great many Latin American species, which means birds you can see nowhere else in the United States are ordinary here — green jays, plain chachalacas, great kiskadees. Birders come from Europe for a morning at the feeders.
