Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park

State Park · Chatsworth, California

Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park lies at the edge of Chatsworth, in the northwest San Fernando Valley, where the valley meets the Santa Susana Mountains. It protects a rugged stretch of rocky hillside and oak canyon along a historic stagecoach road, once a hard route between the valley and the Simi side - confirm the route and trailhead. Sandstone outcrops, boulder piles and views back over the valley give the park its character, and the area holds rock art sites that are fragile and protected (confirm where access is allowed). Stoney Point, a climbing area, is a separate nearby spot. The park is undeveloped: expect a rough trailhead, little shade, heat, rattlesnakes and wildfire closures. It suits experienced hikers, history readers and photographers who like a raw landscape, and it is a poor choice for anyone who wants signs, restrooms, shade, a visitor centre or an easy stroll on a flat path.

California State Parks has generally listed Santa Susana Pass as a day-use park open from about sunrise to sunset - confirm the posted hours. There is no staffed entrance, visitor centre or ticket booth, so access depends on the trailhead being open and safe to reach. Summer afternoons are dangerously hot on open slopes, and early mornings or cooler months are the sensible time. Red flag days, wildfire, smoke and heavy rain can close trails or the whole park with little notice, and trailhead gates may be locked outside open hours - confirm conditions with State Parks before you drive out, and do not park where signs forbid it.
