The wine country half an hour inland from Santa Barbara, spread across a handful of small towns — Los Olivos, Santa Ynez, Ballard and Buellton — and known internationally since the 2004 film Sideways sent Pinot Noir sales up and Merlot sales down. The valley runs east to west, which is rare in California and is why the ocean air reaches this far inland.
