Sao Miguel Island
Largest Island Of The Autonomous Region Of The Azores: The Sete Cidades And Fogo Crater Lakes, The Hot Springs Of Furnas, Tea Plantations And Whale Watching · Ponta Delgada, Azores
Sao Miguel is the largest and most visited island of the Azores, a green volcanic island in the mid-Atlantic about 1,450 km west of Lisbon, and the gateway to the archipelago through its capital, Ponta Delgada. People come for the landscape: the twin blue and green lakes of Sete Cidades inside a huge collapsed crater, the wild crater lake of Lagoa do Fogo, and the steaming valley of Furnas, where fumaroles boil beside the road, a stew called cozido is cooked for hours in the hot ground and you can bathe in the iron-rich thermal pool of Terra Nostra Park. Add warm pools in a fern forest at Caldeira Velha, a hot spring that runs into the sea at Ponta da Ferraria, what is often said to be Europe's oldest tea plantation at Gorreana, pineapples grown under glass and some of Europe's best whale watching. The honest caveat: the weather changes by the hour, fog can hide every famous viewpoint for days, the sea stays cool, the beaches are black volcanic sand, and without a car the island is hard to see.

Open all year; the island never closes, but its sights keep hours. Terra Nostra Park and Caldeira Velha open daily with seasonal hours (roughly morning to early evening, longer in summer), Poca da Dona Beija stays open into the late evening, and the Gorreana tea factory keeps hours that vary by season and weekend - confirm. Several museums in Ponta Delgada close on Mondays. Fly into Ponta Delgada's Joao Paulo II airport from Lisbon or Porto in roughly 2-2.5 hours. Book a hire car weeks ahead for summer, whale watching a few days ahead, the Caldeira Velha bathing slot, and at peak times the Lagoa do Fogo shuttle - confirm the current rules.
