Saratoga Race Course

Racetrack · Saratoga Springs, New York

A thoroughbred track that opened in August 1863, a month after Gettysburg, and is generally described as the oldest organised sporting venue of any kind in the United States. It runs a six-week summer meet and almost nothing about it has been modernised away — the wooden grandstand, the clubhouse turn and the paddock under the elms are recognisably the same place, and it is nicknamed the Graveyard of Champions for the number of great horses beaten here.
