Saratoga Springs

Spa Town · Saratoga Springs, New York

A city of about 28,000 built on naturally carbonated mineral springs, which drew invalids and then the fashionable and then the gamblers through the nineteenth century — the racetrack opened in 1863, a month after Gettysburg. It is now three things at once: a spa town with springs you can still drink from for free, a thoroughbred racing capital for six weeks each summer, and the summer home of the New York City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

297 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, New York, 12866, United States

An open city — free, no gate. The PUBLIC MINERAL SPRINGS ARE FREE TO DRINK FROM year round. Congress Park and Yaddo Gardens are free. ⚠ THE CITY TRANSFORMS DURING THE SUMMER RACING MEET, roughly mid-July to Labor Day, when the population effectively doubles, accommodation books a year ahead and prices multiply.
