Savannah Historic District
National Historic Landmark District · Savannah, Georgia
The original city James Oglethorpe laid out in 1733, built as a grid of wards each arranged around its own public square, of which twenty-two survive. It is one of the largest National Historic Landmark districts in the United States and it is walked rather than toured — live oaks hung with Spanish moss, iron balconies, and a street plan that has been called the finest piece of urban design in colonial America. The whole district is free and open at all hours; everything that charges is optional.
