Sayulita and the Riviera Nayarit
Pueblo MáGico / Riviera Nayarit · Sayulita, Nayarit
Sayulita is a surf village on the Nayarit coast about 40 km, roughly an hour, north of the Puerto Vallarta airport. It has a gentle beach break that suits first-time surfers, a cobbled main street hung with papel picado and Wixarika beadwork stalls, and a steady stream of visitors from the United States and Canada. It grew from fishing village to international destination in about fifteen years and its drainage has not kept pace, so swim away from the river mouth, especially after rain. Ten minutes north, San Pancho keeps the quieter feel Sayulita once had. Offshore lie the Islas Marietas, where the Hidden Beach sits inside a crater opened by military bomb tests and is under a strict visitor cap that has closed it completely before. Expect MXN 600-1,000 (roughly USD 33-55) for a surf lesson, beachfront prices well above the rest of Nayarit, and the best weather from November to April, which also covers humpback whale season in Banderas Bay.
