SC Johnson Administration Building and Research Tower

National Historic Landmark · Racine, Wisconsin

Frank Lloyd Wright's 1936 headquarters for the SC Johnson company in Racine, built around the Great Workroom — an open hall of slender dendriform columns that flare into lily-pad discs at the ceiling, lit by more than forty miles of Pyrex glass tubing instead of windows. Wisconsin's building inspectors refused to permit the columns until Wright had one load-tested to destruction in public in 1937. The 1950 Research Tower alongside it, fifteen storeys cantilevered off a central core, was closed for decades and two of its floors were restored and opened to visitors in 2014. IT IS STILL A WORKING CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS and tours are free.
