The Gardens Include The Gloriette, The Palm House And Tiergarten Schonbrunn, The World'S Oldest Zoo (1752). · Vienna, Vienna

Schonbrunn is the former summer palace of the Habsburgs and Vienna's most visited sight, a yellow Baroque palace of 1,441 rooms in the 13th district. Maria Theresa made it the centre of the court in the 1700s, the six-year-old Mozart played for her here in 1762, and Franz Joseph was born and died within these walls. The rooms on the tour include the Hall of Mirrors, the Million Room, the Napoleon Room, and the study and bedroom of Franz Joseph and the apartments of Empress Elisabeth, known as Sisi. Behind the palace lie Baroque gardens, the Gloriette colonnade on its hill, the Palm House and the Tiergarten, the oldest zoo in the world. The honest view is that the palace is crowded and photography is banned inside, and many visitors find the gardens, which are FREE to enter, more pleasant than the interior. Reach it by the U4 subway to Schonbrunn station, a 5 minute walk, or by tram 10 or 60, and book a timed ticket online first, since summer slots often sell out and the walk-up queue at the ticket office can run to an hour.
