Schooner Gulch State Beach
State Park · Point Arena, California
Schooner Gulch State Beach is a small, wild pocket of the Mendocino coast on Highway 1 near Point Arena, reached by a short but steep trail down to the shore - confirm the length and condition. Its fame comes from the neighbouring stretch known as Bowling Ball Beach, where round sandstone concretions sit in rows on a flat rock shelf and show only at low tide. The southern cove at Schooner Gulch has sea stacks, sandy pockets and bluffs, and loggers once loaded timber onto schooners along this coast. Entry is free, and there are no real facilities - confirm. The water is cold, waves can be sudden and dangerous, and fog and wind are common. Tide timing decides everything: at high tide the shelf is under water and the beach can be cut off. It suits photographers, geology fans and patient walkers, and it is not a swimming or sunbathing beach. Expect a short visit of about two hours, not a full day, with Point Arena for the rest.

Hours are generally sunrise to sunset, and California State Parks has generally run small coastal access points like this one as day-use only, with no staff and no gate - confirm the current hours and whether any fee or pay machine exists, although entry is generally free. Highway 1 on this stretch is a narrow two-lane coast road, and slides, storms or fog can slow or close it. The beach itself has its own schedule, set by the tide rather than the clock: the useful window is roughly an hour either side of a very low tide, and a rising tide can close the route along the cliff. Winter storms can wash out the trail. Check a tide table and the State Parks page on the day.
