Its Sister Site Dynamic Earth, With The Big Nickel, Is About 10 Minutes Away In An Old Mine. Busy With School Groups On Weekdays. · Sudbury, Ontario

Science North is a hands-on science centre in Sudbury, Ontario, set on the shore of Lake Ramsey in a snowflake-shaped building cut into the Canadian Shield rock. It opened in 1984 and is mostly aimed at families and school groups, so expect noise and queues on weekdays in term time. Inside you will find interactive exhibits, a butterfly gallery, live animal displays, an IMAX theatre and a planetarium (confirm which are running), and a rock and mining theme that suits a nickel-mining city. Dynamic Earth, home of the Big Nickel, is a separate site in an old mine a short drive away, and a combined ticket is often offered (confirm). It suits families with children aged roughly 4 to 14 and curious adults. It is not a day trip from Toronto, which is about 4 hours south by road. It works well on a rainy day, and the lakeside boardwalk is a pleasant free extra. Allow three to four hours for Science North alone, and a half day more if you add Dynamic Earth. It is indoor, modern and honest fun, not a landmark.

Opening hours at Science North change by season and by day of the week. Summer and school holidays usually bring longer daily hours, while the rest of the year can mean shorter days and a closed day or two, so confirm the current schedule on the official site before driving in. Last entry is normally well before closing, and the IMAX and planetarium shows run at set times that you should check on arrival or online. Dynamic Earth keeps its own hours, which are often shorter in winter, and underground tours run at fixed departures. Statutory holidays and Christmas week can mean closures. Weekday mornings in term time are the busiest because of school groups.
