Scott Joplin House State Historic Site
Historic House · St. Louis, Missouri
The second-floor flat at 2658 Delmar Boulevard where Scott Joplin lived from 1901 to 1903, in the years when Maple Leaf Rag had already made him the most successful ragtime composer in America and he was writing The Entertainer. It is a modest walk-up in a row of brick houses, furnished to the period, and it is the only surviving Joplin residence anywhere. The site interprets ragtime as serious American composition rather than novelty, which is the argument Joplin spent his life losing.
