Scrovegni Chapel

UNESCO World Heritage Site (Padova Urbs Picta, 2021, One Of Eight Fresco Complexes); Musei Civici Di Padova · Padua, Veneto

A plain brick box beside the ruins of a Roman arena in Padua, put up by a banker's son around 1303 to buy his family out of the usury his father was damned for, and painted inside over about two years by Giotto. What he produced is the hinge on which European painting turns: thirty-eight scenes of the lives of the Virgin and Christ on three tiers, under a barrel vault of blue with gold stars, with figures that have weight, faces that register grief, and a scene of Judas kissing Christ that people still stand in front of in silence. The building is sealed and climate-controlled now. You book at least a day ahead, sit fifteen minutes in an airlock while the air stabilises, and get exactly fifteen minutes inside with no more than twenty-four other people. In summer you can buy two consecutive evening slots and stay forty minutes. It is the strictest ticket in Italy, and still worth every minute of the arranging it takes.
