A rescue and rehabilitation centre on South Padre Island working with the Kemp's ridley — the smallest and most endangered sea turtle in the world, which nests almost nowhere except this stretch of coast and the beaches of Tamaulipas. Turtles that cannot be released live here permanently, and in cold snaps the organisation ends up handling thousands of stunned animals at once.
