Seminole Canyon State Park and Historic Site
Rock Art · Comstock, Texas
A desert canyon above the Rio Grande west of Comstock holding some of the oldest known rock paintings in the United States. Fate Bell Shelter — 150 yards of overhang, forty feet deep — carries Pecos River style pictographs roughly four thousand and possibly five thousand years old, above deposits recording more than eight thousand years of continuous human occupation. The canyon can only be entered with a guide, and the guides are the reason to come.
