The Semipalatinsk Test Site was the main nuclear weapons range of the Soviet Union. Between 1949 and 1989 about 456 tests were carried out on the steppe west of Semey, starting with the first Soviet bomb. Kazakhstan closed the range in 1991. The town of Kurchatov, named for the physicist who led the bomb programme, was the secret base of the scientists and soldiers. Today a few sites can be visited on an organised tour: the ground zero obelisk, the Atomic Lake crater, old control bunkers and a small museum in Kurchatov. This is a place of memory, not a theme park. Many thousands of people in nearby villages were exposed to fallout, often without being told, and illness and birth defects are still part of local life. Visits need a permit and a licensed guide, and the stops are chosen because radiation there is low. Most people reach it from Semey, a long day trip. Come to learn, behave quietly, and confirm current rules before you plan.
Former Soviet nuclear test range on the steppe west of Semey, reached from the closed-era town of Kurchatov; visits go to ground zero, the Atomic Lake crater and the test-control sites with a licensed guide and permission, Kurchatov, Abai, Kazakhstan
There are no public opening hours, because the test site is a restricted zone and can only be entered with a permit and a licensed guide on an arranged tour. Tours usually run as a full day from Semey, starting in the morning, and are mostly offered in the warmer months from late spring to early autumn. The Kurchatov museum opens at limited times and may need a call ahead. Winter snow can block the tracks. Confirm dates, permit time and the route with the operator well before you travel.
