Senja
Norway'S Second Largest Island, Often Called Norway In Miniature; National Tourist Route Senja And Anderdalen National Park · Finnsnes, Troms
Senja is Norway's second-largest island, lying off the coast of Troms between Tromso and the Vesteralen, and it is often called Norway in miniature because it packs almost every Norwegian landscape into one place: a gentle, farmed and forested inner side facing the mainland, and an outer Atlantic coast of jagged peaks falling straight into the sea, with small fishing villages tucked into the fjords between them. The outer coast is followed by the National Tourist Route Senja from Gryllefjord to Botnhamn, with architect-designed stops at Bergsbotn and Tungeneset and an unusually stylish rest stop at Ersfjordstranda. The best-known hikes, Segla and Hesten, climb above the Mefjord to one of the most photographed views in the north, and the south of the island holds Anderdalen National Park. People come for the midnight sun, the northern lights, sea fishing and roads that feel like Lofoten without the queues. The honest caveat: it is quieter because it has far fewer services - long drives, few shops and fuel stations, and many cafes and lodgings closed outside the main seasons.
Senja island, reached by bridge from Finnsnes; National Tourist Route along the outer coast from Gryllefjord to Botnhamn, Finnsnes, Troms, Norway
An island, open all year, with no gates or tickets. The tourist route along the outer coast is usually open year round, but roads and tunnels can close for avalanche risk, storms or roadworks in winter - check the road authority's traffic information before driving. Cafes, fishing camps, tour operators and many rental cabins run mainly from about June to August and again in the aurora season, with a quiet gap in late autumn. Reach the island by bridge from Finnsnes: fly to Bardufoss (roughly 1 hour's drive to Finnsnes) or Tromso (roughly 2.5-3 hours by road), or take the express boat from Tromso to Finnsnes. The summer car ferries Andenes-Gryllefjord and Brensholmen-Botnhamn should be booked ahead in July - confirm their seasons.
