Sequoyah State Park
Oklahoma State Park On Fort Gibson Lake; Home Of The Western Hills Guest Ranch · Hulbert, Oklahoma
One of Oklahoma's largest state parks, about 2,800 acres on a peninsula reaching into 19,000-acre Fort Gibson Lake, which has 225 miles of shoreline, in the Cherokee Nation east of Wagoner, named for Sequoyah, who created the Cherokee syllabary. The park has been a resort since the 1950s, and its lodge — renovated and renamed The Lodge at Sequoyah State Park, with 104 rooms and 45 cottages — is Oklahoma's largest state park lodge complex. Around it are campgrounds, Paradise Cove Marina, a swimming beach, horse stables, a nine-hole golf course and the Three Forks Nature Center with live snakes and turtles. Oak and hickory woods cover the hills, and 20 miles of bridle and hiking trails run the shoreline, with bald eagles wintering over the lake and white-tailed deer everywhere at dusk. It sits half an hour from Tahlequah and the Cherokee Nation's museums, and an hour from Tulsa, which makes it one of the busiest weekend parks in eastern Oklahoma.
