Serpent Mound

Archaeological · Peebles, Ohio

A quarter-mile earthen serpent uncoiling along a bluff in Adams County, its head aligned to the summer solstice sunset and its tail wound into a triple spiral. It is the largest documented effigy mound in the world, it contains no burials, and after nearly two centuries of study nobody can agree who built it or when.

3850 State Route 73, Peebles, Ohio, 45660, United States

Grounds open daily, generally dawn to dusk year-round. The museum keeps shorter seasonal hours and may close in winter. Small per-vehicle parking fee.
