Seven Magic Mountains

Public Art Installation By Ugo Rondinone On Bureau Of Land Management Land, Opened 2016; A Temporary Work Whose Permit Has Been Extended Repeatedly, Most Recently Into 2027 · Jean, Nevada

Seven Magic Mountains is a large public artwork by the Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone in the open desert about 25 miles south of the Las Vegas Strip, beside Las Vegas Boulevard South between the Sloan area and the tiny settlement of Jean. It is seven towers of stacked limestone boulders, each tower often described as about 30 to 35 feet tall, painted in brilliant fluorescent pinks, yellows, blues, greens and oranges that blaze against the grey-brown desert, the dry lake bed and the mountains. It opened in 2016 on Bureau of Land Management land as a temporary installation, originally meant to stand for about two years, and its permit has been extended several times, most recently into 2027; it may be removed when the permit ends, so check that it is still there before driving out. The site is free and open at all hours, with a gravel car park and a short walk to the stacks, but no shade, no water and few or no facilities. It is one of the most photographed places near Las Vegas, busiest at sunrise and sunset, and an easy stop on the drive to or from Southern California.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: Seven Magic Mountains is open land with no gate, open 24 hours a day, every day, with no staff on site; the car park is unlit, so sunrise to sunset is the practical window. The installation is TEMPORARY: its permit has been extended several times, most recently into 2027, and it may be removed after that, or fenced off for repair or repainting at any time. The traps that ruin a trip are driving out without checking it is still there, arriving at midday in summer heat with no water, stopping on the highway shoulder instead of the lot, and relying on a rideshare back to the city. Confirm current status before relying on it.
