Seward Highway

National Scenic Byway And All American Road · Anchorage, Alaska

The 127-mile road from Anchorage to Seward, a National Scenic Byway and All-American Road and one of the most beautiful drives in North America. Leaving Anchorage, it squeezes between the Chugach Mountains and the tidal flats of Turnagain Arm, where beluga whales sometimes feed, Dall sheep graze on roadside cliffs and a bore tide — a wave of incoming tide up to several feet high — rolls up the arm on big tides. Beyond Girdwood and Portage it climbs through Turnagain Pass, passes Summit Lake and Moose Pass, and follows glacier-fed Kenai Lake down to Resurrection Bay. Mileposts count from Seward. It is a busy two-lane road with many crashes, so pull fully off to watch wildlife. In summer 2026 work included a turn lane at McHugh Creek and rockfall mitigation near milepost 113, and winter avalanche control can close it.
