Shadows-on-the-Teche

National Historic Landmark · New Iberia, Louisiana

An 1834 brick house on the Bayou Teche in the middle of New Iberia, built for a sugar planter named David Weeks and owned by his family for four generations. What makes it different from every other house on the Louisiana circuit is THE ARCHIVE: about seventeen thousand family documents survived in the attic — letters, accounts, inventories and receipts — which means the interpretation here is built on paper rather than on furniture and guesswork, and the enslaved people who worked the property are named rather than estimated.

317 East Main Street, New Iberia, Louisiana, 70560, United States

GUIDED TOURS ONLY FOR THE HOUSE, on a rolling schedule and taking about an hour — arrive well before closing for the last departure. A cheaper grounds-only ticket is generally available and the gardens are self-guided. Modest admission with reductions for students, seniors, children, military and NATIONAL TRUST MEMBERS, who enter free or reduced. CHECK THE OPENING DAYS: it is a small site whose schedule has varied, with Sunday and Monday closures at different times. INTERIOR PHOTOGRAPHY IS RESTRICTED. Free parking on site.
