Shah Foladi Protected Area

Conservation Area · Bamyan, Bamyan

The visitable heart of the Koh-e Baba range: a declared protected area of irrigated valleys, high summer pastures and 5,000-metre snow peaks rising directly south of Bamyan town, crowned by Shah Foladi peak at 5,050 metres. Its snows feed nearly all of Afghanistan's major river systems, and its mix of Hazara village life and alpine wilderness — 270 recorded bird species, ibex on the ridges, endemic wildflowers — earned it protection as a living human landscape. Sources give its extent as over 700 square kilometres, with some citing 2,700; either way it is the country's most accessible serious mountain terrain.
