Shahr-e Gholghola
Ancient City · Bamyan, Bamyan
The "City of Screams": a fortified hilltop city on the Bamyan valley floor, stormed and annihilated by Genghis Khan's army in 1221 in revenge for the death of his grandson — the name remembers the massacre. Its melted mud-brick towers and walls crown a free-standing hill with the finest panorama in the valley: the Buddha cliff to the north, the Koh-e Baba wall to the south. It is one component of the UNESCO World Heritage serial property of the Bamyan valley, and the classic sunset ending to any Bamiyan day.
