Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center
Botanical Garden · Orange, Texas
A garden in Orange, deep in the East Texas swamp country, that closed in 1958 after a freak snowfall killed the azaleas and did not reopen for fifty years. When it did, in 2008, it came back as a certified sustainable building project with boat tours out into a cypress-tupelo bayou where herons nest in the trees above you.

⚠ HOURS AND ADMISSION ARE NOT STATED HERE — I could not verify them. Check shangrilagardens.org before travelling. ⚠ THE BAYOU BOAT TOURS ARE SCHEDULED, CAPACITY-LIMITED, WEATHER-DEPENDENT AND POSSIBLY SEPARATELY TICKETED — ask about them first, because they are the best thing here and people miss the last boat. ⚠ March and April bring the azaleas and the heron rookery together. Bring serious mosquito repellent; this is swamp country.
