Shark Bay

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Shark Bay (1991). The World'S Largest And Most Diverse Seagrass Beds, Wild Bottlenose Dolphins Hand Fed At Monkey Mia Every Morning, A Beach Made Entirely Of Tiny White Shells At Shell Beach, And The Stromatolites Of Hamelin Pool, Living Fossils Of The Earliest Life On Earth · Denham, Western Australia

Shark Bay sits at the westernmost point of mainland Australia, about 800 kilometres and roughly eight hours by road north of Perth, taking in two long peninsulas, a scatter of islands and the small township of Denham. The bay carries UNESCO World Heritage listing for four reasons rarely found together: the largest and most diverse seagrass meadows on earth, a significant wild dugong population that grazes them, an unusually rich marine mammal and reptile fauna, and the living stromatolites of Hamelin Pool, structures built by microbes of a type that dominated life on earth for two billion years before more complex organisms evolved. At Monkey Mia, wild bottlenose dolphins have come close inshore for a ranger-managed session most mornings since the 1960s, one of the most reliable wild dolphin encounters anywhere. Shell Beach is made entirely of tiny white cockle shells packed metres deep, once quarried for building blocks. Francois Peron National Park, across red dunes at the tip, adds a stark colour contrast against turquoise water. Distances in the bay are real; a car is essential.

Monkey Mia's dolphin interaction is a scheduled morning event, a first session typically around 8am and sometimes a second later if the dolphins return, though timing shifts daily and is never guaranteed since these are wild animals. A separate World Heritage Drive Zone fee is collected at the visitor centre, open daily through the morning. Hamelin Pool's boardwalk has no gate; its telegraph station museum and cafe keep standard daytime hours and close some afternoons outside peak season. Francois Peron's unsealed tracks run daylight hours only and close after rain.
