Shea's Buffalo Theatre
Theater · Buffalo, New York
⚠ ONE OF THE LAST GREAT AMERICAN MOVIE PALACES STILL IN USE — a 1926 Louis Comfort Tiffany-decorated auditorium of some 3,000 seats on Main Street, ⚠ SAVED FROM DEMOLITION BY VOLUNTEERS IN THE 1970s and restored over four decades. It is now Buffalo's touring Broadway house and ⚠ IT HOLDS A WURLITZER ORGAN INSTALLED FOR THE SILENT ERA THAT IS STILL PLAYED.
646 Main Street, Buffalo, New York, 14202, United States
⚠ A WORKING THEATRE WITH NO CASUAL PUBLIC ACCESS — you need a ticket or a tour. ⚠ ARRIVE AT LEAST THIRTY MINUTES EARLY AND LOOK UP: the 1926 interior was decorated by LOUIS COMFORT TIFFANY and is one of only a handful of surviving Tiffany theatre interiors anywhere. ⚠ IF THE BUILDING IS WHAT YOU WANT, BUY THE CHEAPEST SEAT FOR A NON-BROADWAY EVENT — the upper balcony sees far more of the Tiffany ceiling than the expensive orchestra seats, at a fraction of the price. ⚠ WATCH FOR SILENT FILM SCREENINGS WITH LIVE WURLITZER: the 1926 organ is original to the building and still played, and it is the best thing this venue does. ⚠ CHECK WHETHER BUILDING TOURS ARE RUNNING — the only daylight access. ⚠ THE UPPER BALCONY IS NOT ACCESSIBLE; accessible seating is at orchestra level and must be booked directly and early. ⚠ Metro Rail runs down Main Street to the door.
