Shelburne Museum
Open Air Museum · Shelburne, Vermont
Forty-five acres near Lake Champlain holding thirty-nine exhibition buildings, twenty-five of which are historic structures that were moved here from somewhere else - a lighthouse, a covered bridge, a round barn, a jail, a schoolhouse, and a two-hundred-and-twenty-foot steamboat hauled overland from the lake. Electra Havemeyer Webb founded it in 1947 to house a collection that had outgrown any ordinary building, and it now runs to well over a hundred thousand works: American folk art rated among the finest in the nation, one of the finest collections of wooden decoys in the world, and the Impressionist paintings she inherited from her parents. It is the largest art and history museum in northern New England and it is nothing like any other museum in the country.

⚠ STRICTLY SEASONAL - open DAILY ROUGHLY EARLY MAY TO LATE OCTOBER, about 10am to 5pm, and CLOSED FOR THE WINTER. This is the first thing to check, because a Vermont trip planned around skiing or a Christmas market will not catch this museum open at all, and foliage visitors catch only the last fortnight of the season. The admissions desk and store stay open a little later than the grounds and THE WEATHERVANE CAFE CLOSES EARLIER, running roughly 11am to 3pm. ⚠ ADMISSION IS TIERED BY AGE, IS CHEAPER BOOKED ONLINE THAN AT THE GATE, AND THE TICKET IS VALID FOR TWO CONSECUTIVE DAYS - the museum is 45 acres and 39 buildings and does not fit into one visit. Under-fives and active military are free. Parking is free on site. Exact dates and prices are published each spring; verify before travelling.
