Shelby Farms Park

Regional Park · Memphis, Tennessee

Around four and a half thousand acres on the eastern edge of Memphis — several times the size of Central Park and among the largest urban parks in the United States — on land that was a penal farm until the 1960s. A major redesign completed in 2016 gave it an eighty-acre lake, a visitor centre and a proper network of trails, and it keeps a resident herd of bison in a paddock near the middle, which is the detail nobody believes until they see it.

6903 Great View Drive North, Memphis, Tennessee, 38134, United States

Open daily, generally sunrise to sunset, free, with the visitor centre and concessions keeping shorter hours. Boat and bicycle hire is seasonal. The park closes at night.
