Sheldon Jackson Museum

Alaska State Museums; Sheldon Jackson Museum Building Completed 1897 · Sitka, Alaska

Alaska's oldest museum building, an octagonal concrete structure completed in 1897 on the former Sheldon Jackson College campus in Sitka, and one of the first concrete buildings in Alaska. It holds the collection gathered by the Presbyterian missionary and educator Sheldon Jackson during his travels around Alaska in the 1880s and 1890s, one of the finest early collections of Alaska Native material culture: Yup'ik masks, Iñupiaq ivory and tools, Unangan baskets, Athabascan beadwork, and Tlingit and Haida carvings. Visitors can open pull-out drawers to see more objects than fit in the cases, and Alaska Native artists demonstrate their work in summer. Part of the Alaska State Museums since 1984, it charged $9 for general admission in 2026, $8 for seniors, and nothing for visitors 18 and under or active-duty military families. In summer it opened Monday to Saturday 9 AM-4:30 PM and Sunday afternoons.
