Sheldon Museum of Art
University Of Nebraska Lincoln Art Museum In A Philip Johnson Building · Lincoln, Nebraska
Sheldon Museum of Art is the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's art museum, standing at 12th and R Streets on the edge of the city campus, a few minutes' walk from downtown Lincoln and the Haymarket. It opened in 1963 as the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery in a building designed by Philip Johnson: a pale travertine pavilion of tall, slender arches framing glass, with a double-height Great Hall and a bridge-like stair inside, often described as one of his most refined small buildings. The collection is American art, from nineteenth-century landscape painting through early modernism to post-war abstraction and contemporary work, with names such as Edward Hopper and Georgia O'Keeffe among the holdings; which works hang on a given day changes with rotations and loans. Large outdoor sculptures stand around the building and across campus. Admission has generally been free. Be clear about scale: this is a one- to two-hour visit, not a day, best paired with Morrill Hall and the Haymarket. The hard part is parking, above all on Husker home football Saturdays.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: open Tuesday to Saturday roughly 10 am to 5 pm, with a later evening on one weekday (often Thursday) and shorter afternoon hours on Sunday; closed Mondays and university holidays, with possible changes between semesters. The outdoor sculptures are viewable at any hour. The traps that ruin a visit are turning up on a Monday, driving in on a Husker home football Saturday when parking vanishes, arriving during an exhibition changeover with galleries shut, and parking in a permit-only university lot. Confirm current times before relying on them.
