Shenandoah River State Park

Virginia State Park, Formally The Raymond R. Andy Guest Jr. Shenandoah River State Park, On The South Fork Of The Shenandoah Opposite Shenandoah National Park · Bentonville, Virginia

Sixteen hundred acres on the South Fork of the Shenandoah outside Bentonville, with more than five miles of river frontage and the whole western wall of Shenandoah National Park standing up across the valley. The distinction matters and catches people out constantly: the national park is the ridge, Skyline Drive runs along the top of it, and this is the valley floor beside the river underneath. They are different places with different fees and different characters, and the state park is the one where you actually get on the water. The South Fork here is wide, shallow and slow, which makes it about the friendliest canoeing river in Virginia - outfitters in Bentonville and Front Royal run float trips all summer and the park has its own launches. Behind the river there are twenty-odd miles of trail climbing the bluff for long views up the valley, a campground, riverfront cabins, and enough quiet that it is often a surprise how empty it is given what is a few miles up the hill.
