Sheyenne National Grassland

Public Land · Bismarck, North Dakota

The only national grassland in the tallgrass prairie region of the United States, spread across sandy country along the Sheyenne River in the south-eastern corner of North Dakota. It is nothing like the badlands grassland at the other end of the state: this is rolling sand dune country stabilised by grass, with oak savanna in the hollows and wet meadows between, and it holds one of the largest surviving populations of the threatened western prairie fringed orchid. Public land is interleaved with private, and the North Country National Scenic Trail runs through it.
