Shibin el-Kom and the Monufia Delta
The Densest Farmland In Egypt And The Governorate That Produced Two Of Its Presidents: A Landscape Of Canals, Brick Villages And Cotton Fields With The Denshway Memorial To The 1906 Incident That Turned A Shooting Party Quarrel Into A Nationalist Cause, And Essentially Nothing Built For Visitors Which This Row Says Rather Than Pretending Otherwise · Shibin el-Kom, Monufia
This row exists to close Egypt's map honestly, and it will not pretend Monufia is a destination. It is the densest farmland in the country - a flat green grid of canals, brick villages, cotton and vegetables between the Nile's two branches, with more people per square kilometre living off the land than almost anywhere on earth. Shibin el-Kom is the governorate capital, a working university and textile town. What Monufia has instead of sights is weight: two of Egypt's presidents were born in these villages, and at Denshway in 1906 a quarrel over British officers shooting villagers' pigeons ended in a punitive trial and public floggings that turned a local incident into a national grievance and did as much as anything to make Egyptian nationalism a mass movement. There is a memorial. There is almost nothing else built for a visitor, no English signage and no tourism of any kind, and the honest reason to come is to see the Delta that the rest of Egypt is fed by.
In the middle of the Delta between the two Nile branches, 70 km north of Cairo, with Denshway 20 km west, Shibin el-Kom, Monufia, Egypt
There is no site, no gate, no ticket and no hours - this is a working governorate. The Denshway memorial is open ground beside a village road and WHETHER ANYTHING ON SITE IS LABELLED, IN ARABIC OR ANY OTHER LANGUAGE, SHOULD NOT BE ASSUMED; it is a monument rather than a museum. Shibin el-Kom's market, streets and corniche are ordinary daily life with no visiting arrangements at all. The villages are lived in and a visitor walking through them is a curiosity, which in the Delta means hospitality rather than hostility, but it should be approached with that in mind. Shibin el-Kom is 70 km north of Cairo with frequent trains and buses, about ninety minutes, and Denshway is 20 km west; getting between villages needs a car, a microbus or a willingness to ask.
