Shillong
Capital Of Meghalaya; Former Capital Of British Assam · Shillong, Meghalaya
The capital of Meghalaya, a hill city of pine forests and rolling hills at around fifteen hundred metres, which the British made the capital of Assam and nicknamed the Scotland of the East. It is the heart of Khasi country and has a character unlike the rest of India: a strong Christian presence, a matrilineal society, and a famous love of music, especially rock and country, with live bands in its cafes and a reputation as the music capital of the country. Police Bazaar is the busy centre. Ward's Lake and the Lady Hydari Park are colonial-era gardens. Shillong Peak and Elephant Falls are on the edge of town. The Don Bosco Museum, seven floors of the cultures of the northeast, is one of the best museums in the region. For most visitors Shillong is also the base for Meghalaya's great landscapes: Cherrapunji and the living root bridges, the clear water of the Umngot at Dawki, Mawlynnong village, the Laitlum canyons and Umiam Lake on the road up from Guwahati. Traffic can be heavy, and it rains a great deal.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: most sights open from about 9 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon; the Don Bosco Museum usually closes on Sundays and some holidays; Shillong Peak access depends on the Air Force and can close without notice. Many shops close on Sundays and by about 7 or 8 pm on other days, and the city goes quiet early, though cafes with live music run later at weekends. Occasional strikes can shut everything for a day.
