Shore Acres State Park

Subnational Park · Coos Bay, Oregon

Formal gardens on a cliff top thirteen miles south of Coos Bay, laid out on the site of the timber baron Louis Simpson's estate - the mansion burned in 1921, was rebuilt, decayed and was demolished in 1948, but the gardens survived and the state took them on. There are five acres of clipped hedges, a rose garden and a Japanese-style pond garden sitting directly above a shoreline of tilted sandstone where winter storms throw spray higher than the observation building.
