Shrine of Hazrat Ali (Blue Mosque)
Shrine · Mazar-i-Sharif, Balkh
The turquoise-tiled shrine at the heart of Mazar-i-Sharif — "the noble shrine" that gave the city its name — built in 1481 on the spot where many Afghans believe Ali ibn Abi Talib, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet, lies buried. Najaf in Iraq holds the more widely accepted claim to Ali's tomb, and the rows of white pigeons, the sweep of blue tilework and the Nawruz new-year festival make this the most beloved sacred site in the country regardless. It anchors the north of Afghanistan the way Bamiyan anchors the centre.

The courtyard is effectively open dawn to late evening daily; interior sections follow prayer and custodial schedules. Nothing is published — confirm locally, and expect restricted access during major religious events.
