Shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal
Shrine · Sylhet, Sylhet
The tomb complex of the fourteenth-century Sufi saint who brought Islam to Sylhet, and the spiritual centre of gravity of the whole northeast. Shah Jalal arrived with 360 companions, took the city in 1303 and died here around 1346; his shrine has drawn a continuous river of pilgrims ever since. The complex holds the tomb, a large mosque, a pond of sacred gazar fish that visitors feed by hand, and the famous flocks of jalali pigeons descended - so the story goes - from a pair the saint was given. It is a working devotional site first and a sight second, and it rewards visitors who come in that order.
Dargah Gate, Dargah Mahalla, Sylhet, Sylhet, Bangladesh
The complex is open daily from before dawn prayers until late evening; free entry throughout. Friday Jumu'ah brings the biggest weekly crowds. The annual urs festival follows the lunar calendar and transforms the shrine for several days - check dates locally.
