Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve

Reserva De La Biosfera (CONANP) / Patrimonio Mundial · Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo

A vast protected area on the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo, starting where the hotel strip south of Tulum ends: roughly 528,000 hectares of tidal wetland, mangrove, freshwater lagoon and low tropical forest, with about 100 km of coast and the Mesoamerican barrier reef offshore. UNESCO inscribed it in 1987, and the name is usually translated from Yucatec Maya as where the sky is born. Most visitors do one of two things. At Muyil, a quiet Maya site on Highway 307 about 25 km south of Tulum, a boardwalk leads to a lagoon where community guides run boats to old Maya-cut canals; you put on a life jacket and float with the current through mangrove for the better part of an hour. The other is the long sand road down the Boca Paila spit to Punta Allen, a lobster-fishing village with bonefish flats and almost nothing else. Jaguar, puma, tapir, manatee and crocodile live here, but you will mostly see birds. Expect mosquitoes, rough roads and cash-only prices. It is a nature day, not a resort excursion.
