Sica Hollow State Park

Subnational Park · Sisseton, South Dakota

A deep wooded ravine in the Coteau des Prairies where iron-rich springs stain the water and the mud blood-red and the rotting timber glows faintly at night with foxfire fungus. The Dakota named it Sica - pronounced shee-chah, meaning bad or evil - and regarded it as a place to avoid. It was made a National Natural Landmark in 1967 and it is the strangest small park in South Dakota.
