The Sierra de Alamos-Rio Cuchujaqui Biosphere Reserve protects tropical dry forest at the northern limit of its range in North America, in the foothills of the Sierra Madre east of Alamos in southern Sonora. Thorn forest, oaks and tall river trees shelter military macaws, trogons and other birds found few places else this far north, and jaguars live in the reserve though almost no visitor sees one. Most visitors come for bird watching and short hikes with local guides based in Alamos, along dirt roads and river valleys. It suits birders, naturalists and patient hikers who enjoy a quiet landscape. The forest is green after the rains from July to September and turns dry and brown by spring, with April to June very hot. It is worth the detour if birds or wild country matter to you and you can book a guide; it is not worth it for a casual drive, because there is little built infrastructure and the roads are rough. Check current Sonora travel advice before you go and keep plans simple and in daylight.
