Sierra de Organos National Park

A National Park (2000) Of Tall Rock Columns Like Organ Pipes On A High Desert Ridge, With Trails And Viewpoints And A Past As The Setting For American Westerns Shot There In The 1970s And 1980s. Dry, Windy And Little Visited, A Stop For People On The Zacatecas To Durango Road · Sombrerete, Zacatecas

Sierra de Organos is a small national park on a high desert ridge near Sombrerete, about 150 km north-west of Zacatecas, known for tall rock columns that look like the pipes of a church organ. The columns, formed by volcanic rock, stand in clusters above dry grassland and scrub, and short trails lead to viewpoints and a few sets of formations. The park is also known as the setting of American Westerns shot here in the 1970s and 1980s, a fact that some visitors enjoy and others ignore. It is dry, windy and little visited, with cold winter nights and few services. It suits people already on the road between Zacatecas and Durango who want a few hours of odd scenery, photographers, and short walkers. It is worth the detour if you have a car and an afternoon; it is not worth a special long trip, and there is little to do after the columns. Please check current state travel advice for Zacatecas before you go, and plan to drive by day.
