Sierra de Zapaliname Natural Protected Area
A Rocky Mountain Range Of Oak And Pine And Desert Scrub At The Southern Edge Of Saltillo, A State Protected Area With Endemic Cacti And Hiking Trails And A Bird List Of High Plateau Species. The City'S Nearest Natural Escape, Cool In Winter And Hot In Summer, With Limited Facilities · Saltillo, Coahuila
Sierra de Zapaliname is a rugged limestone range rising just south of Saltillo in Coahuila, protected as a natural area and known for its endemic cacti, agave and high-desert scrub that turns to oak and pine on the cooler slopes. It is the city's nearest wild country, with dirt tracks, hiking trails and a few viewpoints over the plateau, and a bird list that includes raptors, jays and desert species. There are no big visitor facilities: expect rough paths, local ejido land, park guards or community contacts for access, and little signage. Saltillo is the base for food, rooms and supplies, and the small town of Arteaga lies nearby on the east side. It suits hikers, botanists and birders who are happy to plan their own day and carry everything. It is worth a half or full day if you like rocky scenery and plants, but not for anyone who wants a staffed park with visitor centres, paved trails or easy transport. Summer is hot, winter nights are freezing, and rattlesnakes, sun and thin water supply are real concerns, so go prepared.
Sierra de Zapaliname, the limestone range south of Saltillo and its protected area, reached from Saltillo by road and local trails; coordinates approximate, Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico
There is no staffed park with fixed opening hours, so access is by daylight, normally from dawn to late afternoon, and times depend on the local ejido, park guards or the state agency that manages entry. Some routes cross community land that is CLOSED to visitors without permission, and gates may be locked outside daytime. Walking on public tracks may be FREE, but a small access or parking fee at certain points is possible, so confirm before you go. Heavy rain, snow or fire danger can close routes without notice.
