Sierra Fria Natural Protected Area

A State Protected Pine And Oak Mountain Range Above The Desert Plateau, With Lakes, Reservoirs, Cabins And Trout Restaurants, The Weekend Nature Escape Of Aguascalientes. Cool, With Bird Watching, Hiking, Mountain Biking And Horse Riding. Quiet Outside Holidays · San Jose de Gracia, Aguascalientes

Sierra Fria is a range of pine and oak mountains north-west of the city of Aguascalientes, high above the dry plateau and noticeably cooler than the valley below. Around the village of San Jose de Gracia the road climbs to the Presa Plutarco Elias Calles reservoir and the smaller Presa Los Alamitos, where families rent cabins, eat trout at lakeside restaurants and walk forest tracks. Mountain biking, horse riding and bird watching are the usual activities, and winter nights can be properly cold, with fog settling over the ridges. It suits locals and visitors based in Aguascalientes who want a quiet half day or a night in a cabin, 45 minutes to an hour from the city. It is worth the detour on a weekday or in the green months after the rains; it is not worth a special trip from far away, and weekends and holidays fill the lakeside road with traffic and music. Trails are lightly signed, so a map or a local guide helps.

Sierra Fria, the pine-oak mountains north-west of Aguascalientes city around San Jose de Gracia and the Presa Plutarco Elias Calles; coordinates approximate, San Jose de Gracia, Aguascalientes, Mexico

The protected area has no single gate, so access is mostly open all day on the public road, and the lakeside restaurants and cabin sites keep their own hours, commonly from late morning to early evening, longest at weekends. Many small businesses are CLOSED or have limited service on weekdays outside holidays, so call ahead for cabins. Driving through, looking at the reservoirs from the road and walking public tracks are FREE; private cabin grounds, camping areas and horse hire charge their own fees. Fog and winter frost can close side tracks, and hours are not fixed, so confirm locally.
