A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (2001) That Holds The Most Diverse Habitats In Central Mexico, From Desert Scrub To Cloud Forest, With Jaguars, Rare Orchids, Caves, Waterfalls And The Sierra Gorda Missions Of Fray Junipero Serra. Run With Strong Community Involvement, With Ecolodges, Waterfalls And Viewpoints Reached On Winding Mountain Roads · Jalpan de Serra, Querétaro
Sierra Gorda is a mountain biosphere reserve in northern Queretaro, where the Sierra Madre Oriental folds into steep green ridges and the habitat changes from dry desert scrub to cloud forest within a single day's drive. It is among the most varied protected areas in central Mexico, home to jaguars, ocelots, many orchids and a good number of birds, and much of the conservation work is run by local communities and the Grupo Ecologico Sierra Gorda. Jalpan de Serra is the usual base, with Landa de Matamoros close by, and visitors go out on guided eco-routes to waterfalls, caves, viewpoints such as Cuatro Palos and small community lodges. The roads are narrow and winding, notably Highway 120, so distances take far longer than the map suggests. It suits nature lovers, birders and slow drivers who like small villages. It is worth the detour for two or three unhurried days; it is not worth it as a rushed day trip from Queretaro city, which is three to four hours away each way, or for anyone prone to car sickness.

The reserve is open all year and has no single gate, so there is no closing time for the mountains and villages themselves. Individual sites are different: community waterfalls, eco-lodges and caves usually work daylight hours, often roughly 9 am to 5 pm, and many close or need an advance call on weekdays in the low season. Guided routes are best booked a day ahead. Driving the roads is FREE and so are the viewpoints from the roadside; entry to community sites and guided tours is charged. Some caves and river routes are CLOSED in the rainy season when the water rises. Confirm days locally, since hours change by village.
