Sile
A Seaside Resort Town On The Black Sea Coast With An Old Lighthouse On A Rocky Headland, Wide Beaches, Hand Woven Sile Cloth And Fish Restaurants. A Summer Day Trip From Istanbul, With Cool Sea And Busy Weekends · Sile, Istanbul
Sile is a Black Sea resort town on the Asian side of Istanbul province, roughly 70 km north-east of the city centre, built around a small harbour, a rocky headland with a stone lighthouse from the 19th century (confirm) and long beaches of pale sand on either side. Fishing boats unload beside the quay, and low hotels, fish restaurants and cloth shops climb the slope behind. Sile cloth, a light cotton weave that is often embroidered, is the town craft and is sold in many small shops and at the weekend market (confirm). A castle ruin stands on a rocky islet off the coast (confirm), and a coastal road leads to wilder beaches and forest. The Black Sea here is cooler and rougher than the Aegean, with strong currents on open beaches, so swimmers should follow flags and local advice. The town is crowded and slow to reach on summer weekends, and quiet in winter when many hotels close. It is a popular day trip for Istanbul families.
