Silent Lake Provincial Park lies off Highway 28 about 20 km south of Bancroft in the Hastings Highlands of eastern Ontario, on the edge of the Canadian Shield where granite ridges, maple hills and quiet lakes meet (confirm distance and highway number). The lake the park is named for is closed to motor boats, so the water stays calm and the loudest sound at dawn is a loon, which makes it a favourite with paddlers and anglers who want to hear the shore. A sandy beach, a large campground set among pine and hardwood, hiking trails of several lengths, backcountry canoe-in sites and a rental service for boats fill a summer stay, and winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Bancroft, which calls itself the mineral capital of Canada, is close for rock shops, groceries and gem country trips. A vehicle permit is needed for day use, and camping is reserved through Ontario Parks (confirm all prices and dates).
