Silver Beach (Beihai)
Long White Sand Beach On The Beibu Gulf; National Tourist Resort · Beihai, Guangxi
A long, shallow bay of pale sand on the Beibu Gulf coast of Guangxi, and the best-known beach in southern China outside Hainan. Silver Beach runs for about twenty-four kilometres, and its sand is unusually fine and white - quartz worn down over millennia, which gives the beach its name and squeaks underfoot in the dry. The water shelves so gently that waders can go out a long way without getting out of their depth, and the shallows stay warm from spring to autumn, which is why it fills with families in summer. Behind the sand are parks of palms and casuarina, a huge kinetic sculpture of a silver conch, seafood restaurants and the resort strip; offshore, the sunsets over the gulf are the evening event. Beihai itself is a pleasant old port with a nineteenth-century British consulate quarter along Zhuhai Road, and boats leave the passenger terminal for Weizhou Island. Reports say the beach zone became free to enter from 2026, having previously charged for some sections.
