Sinks Canyon State Park
State Park · Lander, Wyoming
A narrow canyon of the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River six miles south-west of Lander, known for a geological oddity: the river pours into a limestone cavern called the Sinks and vanishes, then wells up a quarter mile downstream in a calm pool called the Rise, full of large trout. Dye tests showed the water takes far longer to reappear than the short distance suggests. A seasonal visitor centre explains it, and trails, campsites and climbing crags line the canyon. Bighorn sheep come down in winter. Dye tests showed the water takes about two hours to reach the Rise, and more comes out than goes in. The park lies about 6 miles south-west of Lander on WY 131, and it charges no day-use fee.
